  • Description

THE GREEL MILITARY GOVERNMENT TODAY (WEDNESDAY) PUBLISHED A LAW INTERPRETING THE AMNESTY FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS, BUT LEAVING IN DOUBT THE FATE OF SOME 2,500 POLITICAL PRISONERS DETAINED ON THE ISLANDS OF YARDS AND LEROS WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN CHARGED. THE AMNESTY, HOWEVER, AFFECTS ABOUT 300 PEOPLE IMMEDIATELY, AND SOME OF THEM ARRIVED YESTERDAY IN PIRAEUS FROM THE ISLAND PRISONS, AND OTHERS WERE FREED FROM AVEROFF PRISON IN ATHENS.

ACCORDING TO THE LAW PUBLISHED TODAY, ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS HELD ON CHARGES OF SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES UNDER A 20-YEAR-OLD DECREE PASSED TO OVERCOME THE COMMUNIST UPRISING OF 1947, WILL BE AMNESTIED.

AMONG THOSE TO BE RELEASED IS THE GREEK COMPOSER, MIKIS THEODORAKIS.

BUT THE POSITION OF THE OTHER 2,500 OR SO PRISONERS HELD ON LEROS AND YAROS, STILL REMAINS OBSCURE. THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN CHARGED WITH ANY OFFENCE,BUT HAVE BEEN DETAINED FOR REFUSING TO SIGN STATEMENTS PLEDGING LOYALTY TO THE GOVERNMENT AND PROMISING NOT TO INDULGE IN POLITICS.

AN OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE BACKGROUNDS OF THESE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TO BE INVESTIGATED.
