Background: Thousands of Cypriots packed the streets around Archbishop Makarios' residence in Nicosia on Monday (14 February) following the news that the Cypriot leader had formally rejected Greek Government suggestions for a reshuffle of his cabinet.

The present crisis, centring around Enosis (union with Greece), is undermining the Cyprus Government's authority for resuming talks with the Turkish-Cypriot community on ending the eight-year-old quarrel between the Greek and Turkish factions. A date for a resumption of the intercommunal talks, with a United Nations representatives and Greek and Turkish advisers taking part, has yet to be fixed.
