  • Description

Traffic police in Nairobi, Kenya, began enforcing within 24 hours a law published on Thursday (Aug 24) making it an offence for vehicles to emit visible smoke or vapour. A number of motorists and lorry owners were caught in police checks. If convicted they face fines of up to ???25, or two months jail.

The new law is aimed mainly against the owners of diesel-driven lorries and buses.

Another traffic law - to be introduced shortly - will ban unnecessary use of the horn and in particular musical horns. Kenya's attorney-general Mr Charles Njonjo, said such hooters were 'a menace'.
