    NOWADAYS AUTOMATED MACHINERY DIGS THE COAL FAR QUICKER AND CHEAPER, AND COMPETITION FROM OTHER FUELS HAS SEVERELY HIT THE MARKET. A FEW OF THE MINERS EARN A BARE EXISTENCE IN NON-UNION MINES, GRUBBING COAL BY HAND, FOR AS LITTLE AS THREE DOLLARS A DAY (ABOUT GBP1); A LOW WAGE IN AMERICA IS ABOUT 20 DOLLARS (ROUGHLY GBP8).

    THIS WEEK, A DEPUTATION OF THE MINERS WENT TO WASHINGTON TO SEEK HELP. THEY HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE IN A WASHINGTON CHURCH, AND THEN PICKETED THE WHITE HOUSE. THEY HOPED TO SEE PRESIDENT JOHNSON, CONGRESSMEN, AND OFFICIALS OF THE COAL MINERS' UNION. ONE OF THEIR LEADERS TOLD REPORTERS:
