  • Description

About 250 Kurdish students in West Germany demonstrated in Bonn on Monday (16 December), protesting about Iraqi attacks on their homeland in Northern Iraq.

The Iraqi Government has resumed its bombing offensive against the Kurdish forces of General Mustafa Barzani which have been holding out since March in the mountains of northern Iraq.

Fighting has been going on for 14 years. The Kurds -- a separate ethnic group -- want an autonomous state of Kurdistan within Iraq.

They have recently appealed to international organisations for relief supplies of food and medicine to help their refugees. There are now an estimated half a million refugees, according to Kurdish doctors.

On Monday, the protesting students called at the Soviet Embassy asking the Soviet Government not to supply the Iraqi Government with arms and military equipment.

They also demonstrated outside the Iraqi Embassy, where the students wer joined by another group of Kurdish students. Police kept a close watch on them to prevent incidents.
