  • Description

A large rally in Beirut on April sixth marked two anniversaries-- the thirty-second of the founding of the Ba'ath Party and the tenth of the Arab Liberation Front.

SYNOPSIS: Members of the Lebanese group of the Ba'ath party and supporters of the Arab Liberation Front marched through the streets of Beirut to the rally site.

Armed soldiers were posted along the parade route to ward off any unwelcome demonstrations.

The leaders headed the procession marking this dual anniversary. The Ba'ath Socialist Party chief, Abdel-Majid Rafei, was present, as well as a representative of the Syrian Socialist Party. The Al-Ba'ath Party, a revolutionary Arab socialist movement, was founded in Damascus in 1947, and has ruled Iraq since July 1968.

Since 1973 it has been allied with the Iraqi Communist Party in the National Progressive Front. Abu Iyad, PLO chief Yasser Araft's second in command was applauded for his speech on Arab unity.
