  • Description

THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE, MR. DEAN RUSK, ARRIVED IN SAIGON LAST WEEK (FRIDAY) WITH A RENEWED ASSURANCE OF AMERICAN SUPPORT FOR THE STRUGGLE AGAINST COMMUNISM IN THE AREA.

AT THE AIRPORT TO MEET HIM WERE THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO SOUTH VIETNAM, MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE, AND THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE FOREIGN MINISTER, DR. PHAN HUY QUAT.

SHORTLY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL MR. RUSK DECIDED TO EXTEND HIS WEEKEND VISIT UNTIL MONDAY AS RUMOURS CIRCULATED IN SAIGON THAT A NEW COUP D'ETAT WAS LIKELY WITHIN 48 HOURS.

ALTHOUGH IT WAS SAID MR. RUSK WANTED TO EXTEND HIS TALKS WITH OFFICIALS IN SAIGON SOME THOUGHT IT POSSIBLE THAT THE CHANGE OF PLAN MIGHT BE PART OF AN AMERICAN ATTEMPT TO PREVENT A COUP AGAINST GENERAL KHANH. THE GENERAL HAS RECEIVED FULL PUBLIC SUPPORT FROM THE UNITED STATES AND IT HE WERE TO FALL AMERICAN PRESTIGE WOULD SLUMP.
