  • Description

New Ministers appointed in a reshuffle of the Czechoslovak Federal Government were sworn in on Sunday (3 January) by President Ludvik Svoboda. The appointments are in the line with a new law which came into force on 1 January.

The changes mark a return to centralisation, particularly in the economic field. The strengthening of federal power, according to reports from Prague, is seen as an attempt to centralise planning efforts and to reduce rivalry between the Czech and Slovak regions for the country's available investment and material resources.

Mr. Jan Gregor is one of two new deputy premiers--the other is Mr. Jindrich Zahradnik; Dr. Stefan Sutka becomes Federal Minister of Transport; Professor Jaromir Matuska is the new Minster of Fuel and Power; Dr. Josef Simon becomes Minister of Metallurgy and Engineering; Mr. Drahomir Kolder is Minister-Chairman of the Czechoslovak Control Committee, and Mr. Valclav Hula Chairman of the State Planning Committee.

Changes were also announced in the Czech and Slovak Governments, where the reshuffles resulted in fewer posts than before.
