  • Description

A CROWD OF SOME 3,000 GATHERED OUTSIDE SIBU AIRPORT, SARAWAK, LAST TUESDAY TO GREET THE UNITED NATIONS MALAYSIA ASSESSMENT TEAM WITH AN ANGRY ANTI-MALAYSIA DEMONSTRATION.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, MOSTLY CHINESE, CARRIED BANNERS WITH SUCH SLOGANS AS: "TUNKU NO: SUKARNO YES" AND "WE WANT SELF-DETERMINATION." POLICE RIOT SQUADS KEPT THE CROWD UNDER CONTROL. FOUR DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED, BUT LATER RELEASED.

CARS CARRYING THE UNITED NATIONS, TEAM, HEADED BY MR. LAURENCE MICHELMORE OF THE UNITED STATES, WERE ABLE TO LEAVE THE AIRPORT IN COMPARATIVE SAFETY. WHEN THEY REACHED THE SCHOOL, WHERE THEY WERE TO HEAR THE PEOPLE'S OPINION ON JOINING THE PROPOSED FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA, THEY WERE STONED. ROCKS WERE HURLED THROUGH THE WINDOWS AND THE CARS OVERTURNED. THREE POLICEMEN AND A NUMBER OF DEMONSTRATORS WERE INJURED.

LATER A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN BLAMED THE DEMONSTRATION ON THE ANTI-MALAYSIA OPPOSITION SARAWAK PEOPLE'S PARTY, BUT MR. YOUNG, THE ORGANISATION'S GENERAL-SECRETARY, DENIED THIS. HE SAID IT WAS THE WORK OF SOME ENTHUSIASTS DETERMINED TO SHOW THE TRUE FEELING OF THE PEOPLE THERE ON MALAYSIA.
