  • Description

Jordan's National Council, made up of both Houses of Parliament met on Thursday (5 February) and approved an amendment to the constitution empowering King Hussein to postpone elections indefinitely.

The amendment also enables the monarch to convene the House of Representatives, the Lower House, in extraordinary session to introduce further amendments to the constitution.

The 60-member Lower House, with half of its representatives drawn from the Israeli-occupied West Bank, was dissolved in November 1974, in compliance with a resolution of the seventh arab summit in Rabat.

The resolution recognised the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as sole representative of the Palestinian people.

The cabinet has decided and the King has agreed that there will be no new elections to the Lower House. The old House will be revived and called on to exercise its former legislative powers.

Addressing the Council on Thursday, the Premier, Zeid Al-Rifai, said a decision to hold general elections still stood but these would take place "at the appropriate time".
