  • Description

South Korea finished top of the Asian Preliminary Games for the World Cup Volleyball Tournament when they beat China 3-0 at Hong Kong's MacPherson stadium on Sunday (21 November).

SYNOPSIS: The Chinese, here serving in the first set, lost two games in the four-nation round robin tournament, both of them to the Koreans. India and Hong Kong were the other teams in the group.

The Koreans charged to a 15-7 victory in the first set, with brilliant spiking and blocking, and pin-point accuracy. The Chinese fought back gamely in the second set but were unable to meet the spiking force of the sturdy Koreans. The Chinese eventually wilted under the pressure of the Koreans, who took the second set, 15-11.

In the third and final set, China pushed Korea again, but the greater experience and skill of the Koreans enabled them to win the set 15-13 and end the tournament undefeated.

The Koreans have plenty of time to savour their win, because the World Cup final in Tokyo isn't until November next year.
