  • Description

On Epsom Downs, on the outskirts of London today (Sunday) the clock was turned back half a century when nearly 250 veteran motor cycles gathered for their annual run to the seaside of Brighton.

The motor cycles, all built before 1915, faced some of the wettest weather conditions ever experienced on the run. As one competitor put it: "It's hard enough to keep them going anyway let alone in these conditions."
Many of the oldest motor cycles had water-cooled engines, their owners too, were soon water-cooled.

The run to the coast in neither a race nor a competition, but a procession of historic motor cycles, side-cars, and tri-cars. Those that manage to complete the hilly 44 mile run are awarded with a bronze plaque.

Despite today's bad condition most of the entries arrived in Brighton, and for those that didn't there was a special rescue service provided.
