AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST CIVIC AID PROJECT TO SOUTH VIETNAM BEGAN ARRIVING IN SAIGON. THE PROJECT WILL COST A TOTAL OF $1,000,000. ON TUESDAY, APRIL 25, WHICH WAS ANZAG DAY, THE AUSTRALIAN LANDING CRAFT NAMED VERNON STURDEE, BROUGHT IN THE FIRST CONSIGNMENT FROM THE COASTAL PORT OF VUNG TAU, ABOUT 45 MILES AWAY.

THE AID MATERIALS UNLOADED WERE 700 TONS OF WATER PIPE FOR THE NEW WATER RETICULATION SYSTEM BEING BUILT IN BIEN HOA, NEAR SAIGON....107 TONS OF TELEPHONE CABLE FOR THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE POST AND TELEGRAPHS DEPARTMENT. THE CABLE WILL HELP RELIEVE THE BURDEN ON SAIGON'S OVER-TAXED TELEPHONE SYSTEM. TELEPHONES ARE SO HARD TO GET IN SAIGON THAT BUSINESSMEN ARE PREPARED TO PAY UP TO $1,000 FOR ONE.

THE SHIPMENT ALSO CONSISTED OF THREE ELECTRICITY GENERATORS... TWO FOR THE PROJECT CONCERN HOSPITAL NEAR DALAT, AND THE OTHER FOR THE ASIAN CHRISTIAN SERVICE TEAM WORKING IN REFUGEE CAMPS. (THE GENERATORS WERE THE SUBJECT OF SOME POLITICAL THUNDERING IN AUSTRALIA BEFORE THEY WERE ALLOWED TO BE SHIPPED TO VIETNAM.)
THE PROJECT CONCERN HOSPITAL IS AN AMERICAN PROJECT, WITH WORLD-WIDE SUPPORT.
