    PRESIDENT JEAN BEDEL BOKASSA OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC ARRIVED IN KHARTOUM ON THURSDAY (11 SEPTEMBER) AT THE START OF A TWO-DAY STATE VISIT TO SUDAN. PRESIDENT BOKASSA IS STOPPING IN KHARTOUM ON HIS WAY HOME FROM THE SUMMIT MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (O.A.U.) IN ADDIS ABABA.

    PRESIDENT BOKASSA WAS MET AT KHARTOUM AIRPORT BY GENERAL JAAFAR EL-NIMEIRY, PRESIDENT OF THE SUDANESE REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL, PRIME MINISTER ABUBAKR AWADALLAH AND OTHER HIGH OFFICIALS AND DIPLOMATS. UPON HIS ARRIVAL, THE PRESIDENT WAS SALUTED BY A GUARD OF HONOUR AND WAS GIVEN A 21-GUN SALUTE.

    DURING HIS VISIT TO SUDAN, PRESIDENT BOKASSA AND SUDANESE OFFICIALS WILL HOLD TALKS ON THE STRENGTHENING OF ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

    THE O.A.U. SUMMIT, FROM WHICH PRESIDENT BOKASSA WAS RETURNING, ENDED ON WEDNESDAY (10 SEPTEMBER) AFTER CALLING OF THE SUSPENSION OF HOSTILITIES IN NIGERIA AND THE IMMEDIATE OPENING OF PEACE TALKS. THE DELICATELY-WORDED FINAL RESOLUTION ON THE SUBJECT WAS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE A TRUCE IN THE 28-MONTH-OLD CIVIL WAR WHICH FOR THE THIRD TIME HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN GATHERING OF AFRICAN HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENTS. THE RESOLUTION CALLS ON BOTH PARTIES TO AGREE ON A CEASE-FIRE TO BE FOLLOWED BY NEGOTIATIONS "INTENDED TO PRESERVE THE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF NIGERIA".
