    THE NATIONAL RECONCILIATION COMMITTEE OF NIGERIA MET IN LAGOS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO HEAR DETAILED REPORTS FOLLOWING PEACE OVERTURES ITS SPECIAL MISSION MADE TO THE DISSIDENT EASTERN REGION. THE MISSION WAS LED BY CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO, A LEADER OF THE YORUBA PEOPLE OF WESTERN NIGERIA.

    THE MISSION HAD ITS TALKS WITH COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU, THE EASTERN REGION MILITARY GOVERNOR. A PUBLIC STATEMENT IS EXPECTED IN LAGOS LATER TODAY, BUT EARLY REPORTS SUGGEST A BREAKTHROUGH IN THE NIGERIAN CRISIS AS A RESULT OF THE WORK OF THE RECONCILIATION COMMITTEE.

    THE COMMITTEE WAS FORMED TWO WEEKS AGO BY DISTINGUISHED NIGERIANS DRAWN FROM THE FOUR REGIONS OF NIGERIA. CHIEF AWOLOWO LAST WEEK DISCUSSED THE OUTCOME OF HIS MISSION TO THE EASTERN REGION WITH THE LEADER OF THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT IN LAGOS, LIEUTENANT COLONEL YAKUBO GOWON.
