  • Description

Massive explosions rocked the Khmer Republic capital of Phnom Penh yesterday as fire raced through an ammunition dump housed in a sports' stadium in the city. Visnews cameraman Neil Davis was on the scene and began filming within a minute of the first explosion which quickly triggered off a long series of even more powerful reports. He was the only cameraman inside the stadium at the time. Davis risked his life and stayed inside the stadium during the height of the explosions. Investigators have begun probing the debris to establish the cause. The stadium, built by the People's Republic of China in 1968, is the headquarters of the elite Khmer Krom troops. Born and bred in South Vietnam...but Khmers...they have returned to fight in their own country.

SYNOPSIS: A fire at the headquarters of the elite Khmer Krom troops in Phnom Penh yesterday triggered off a series of massive explosions which shook the Republic's capital. The troops born and bred in South Vietnam...but Khmers...they have returned to fight in their mother country. Their headquarters and living area is in a sports' stadium built by the People's Republic of China in 1968. The fire started near some ammunition boxes stored underneath a building. After an initial explosion the whole area erupted.

Tons of mines, rockets and mortar shells, housed in the camp went up in smoke. At least ten people were injured.

Visnews cameraman Neil Davis risked his life to take this film. He was the only cameraman inside the compound at the time of the explosions and was filming a minute after the outbreak of the fire. He stayed inside the compound throughout the inferno.

The ammunition was to have been supplied to soldiers fighting along the east bank defences of the capital. The loss of the ammunition comes at a time when Khmer troops are engaged in some of the heaviest fighting of the war in areas throughout the country.
