    WITH THE BRITISH PRECAUTIONARY DEFENCE BUILD UP IN MALAYSIAN BECAUSE OF PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S THREAT TO STEP UP HIS EFFORTS TO CRUSH MALAYSIA, FOUR BRITISH MINESWEEPERS AND TWO SEAWARD DEFENCE CRAFT WERE REACTIVATED FROM THE MOTHBALL FLEET IN THE SINGAPORE NAVAL BASE ON WEDNESDAY (JANUARY 6, 1965).

    THE MINESWEEPERS ARE THE LULLINGTON, THANKERTON, INVERMORISTON AND PICKTON. EACH ABOUT 360 TONS AND 150 FEET LONG ARE WELL ARMOURED AND ARMED. EACH HAS A COMPLEMENT OF THIRTY MEN. THE SEAWARD DEFENCE CRAFT WEIGHING 120 TONS ARE SPECIALLY DESIGNED AGAINST SHIPPING ATTACKS IN COASTAL WATERS. EACH HAS ACOMPLEMENT OF 25 MEN.

    NEARLY TWO-HUNDRED OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE ROYAL NAVY ARE BEING FLOWN TO SINGAPORE FROM BRITAIN TO MAN THE FOUR MINESWEEPERS AND THE DEFENCE CRAFT. THEY ARE BEING TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER MINESWEEPERS ALREADY IN SERVICE IN BRITISH HOME WATERS.

    THE FOUR MINESWEEPERS BRINGS TO ABOUT TWENTY THE TOTAL NUMBER OF MINESWEEPERS IN THE FAR EAST.
