Background: AFTER PASSING THROUGH BURGHFIELD, BERKSHIRE, THE 15,000 SUPPORTERS OF THE BAN-THE-BOMB CAMPAIGN WHO LEFT ALDERMASTON EARLY ON APRIL 20 ON A 50-MILE ANTI-NUCLEAR PROTEST MARCH TO LONDON WERE NEARING READING, WHERE THEY BEDDED DOWN AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY OF THEIR FOUR-DAY TREK.

WEARY WALKERS WITH BLISTERED FEET GRATEFULLY DRANK NUMBERLESS CUPS OF TEA BEFORE PREPARING TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN EMERGENCY QUARTERS. MOST OF THEM, INCLUDING THEIR TWO LEADERS, CANON COLLINS AND PROFESSOR RITCHIE CALDER, SLEPT IN BIT TENTS, AND MANY OF THEM HAD A DISTURBED NIGHT WHEN, AT 3 A.M., A HOAXER ANNOUNCED BY LOUDSPEAKER THAT IT WAS TIME TO GET UP.

WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS CONTINUED THEIR MARCH AFTER A GOOD BREAKFAST THE NEXT MORNING, THEIR NUMBERS WERE ESTIMATED AT ONLY 10,000. THERE WERE, HOWEVER, MORE OVERSEAS BANNERS APPARENT IN THE PROCESSION, SHOWING THAT THE ANTI-NUCLEAR MOVEMENT HAS SUPPORT IN THE MIDDLE EAST, AFRICA AND NORTH AMERICA.

LORD RUSSELL, LEADER OF BRITAIN'S ANTI-NUCLEAR COMMITTEE OF 100, HAS APPEALED TO EIGHT NEUTRAL COUNTRIES INCLUDING INDIA TO SEND THEIR NAVIES TO THE PACIFIC CHRISTMAS ISLANDS, WHERE THE UNITED STATES IS. EXPECTED TO HOLD ATOMIC TESTS THIS MONTH. HE SAID THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT HAD NO RIGHT TO USE THESE WATERS AND WAS DEFYING INTERNATIONAL LAW BY USING THEM TO POISON THE ATMOSPHERE.
