  • Description

In the Khmer Republic, units of the Army are making a concerted effort to free the beleaguered town of Kompong Trabek - in the eastern part of the country. Communist forces have surrounded the town, and last week were reported to be tightening their grip.

Kompong Trabek lies towards the "Parrot's Beak" area of the Khmer Republic, across the Mekong River from the capital, Phnom Penh. The river crossing at Neak Leung was a scene of hective activity on Thursday (10 August) as troop reinforcements moved towards the communist concentrations - while hundreds of refugees fled in the opposite direction.

Among the troops gathering at Neak Leung were some teenage boys, aged between ten and fourteen. Also there were young girls, dressed in Army uniforms.

Since this film was shot, Khmer Army units have clashed with Communist troops about six miles (10kms) north of the river crossing. They've recaptured a town, and reported finding the bodies of hundreds of North Vietnamese soldiers.
