  • Description

Throughout the Islamic world, members of the Shi'ite Muslim sect are observing the feast of Ashoura, which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and 72 companions over a thousand years ago.

SYNOPSIS: In Karachi, in Pakistan, zealous followers marked the anniversary in the traditional way - with parades and flagellation. Hussain was a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed and considered by the Shi'ites as his rightful successor. He was killed in the year 61 Hirji, about 630 AD, at Karbala in what is now Iraq after a battle between the Shi'ites and the Sunnites who were the main body of the Islamic faith. Now the more zealous of the Shi'ite followers remember Hussain by spilling their own blood using flails tipped with knives.

Thousands of devotees took part in the Karachi memorials. But not all Muslims regard the anniversary similarly.

The majority of the faithful regard Ashoura as the day Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden and Noah left the Ark.
