Background: Units of the 4th Marines recently terminated OPERATION CHINOOK II. This search and destroy action centered in an area 16 kilometers northwest of HUE in THUA THIEN province.
Marines from the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines conducted a search near the village of AP TRUNG KIEU as one of the first phases of the operation. Vietnamese civilians moving along Highway 1 continue their business as the troops look for signs of Viet Cong guerrilla activity. The sweep takes the Marines across a small stream and through the village.
The overall operation was supported by 187 air sorties and six naval gunfire missions. 104 enemy were killed, and 135 suspects detained. One suspect was captured near AP TRUNG KILU and information received from him indicated Viet Cong might be in the area.
A tunnel complex is found and several suspects are persuaded to come out of the small entry holes rather than be killed underground. These suspects were confirmed, not as guerrillas, but as NVA, members of the 504th North Vietnamese Army Regiment. Helicopters are summoned to evacuate these prisoners to the Marine regimental command post.
