  • Description

THE ISLAMIC FOREIGN MINISTERS CONFERENCE IN JEDDAH WOUND UP ITS TALKS YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BY ISSUING A COMMUNIQUE CONDEMNING ISRAELI OCCUPATION OF ARAB TERRITORIES. THE MINISTERS ALSO CONDEMNED ISRAEL FOR REFUSING TO CANCEL MEASURES AIMED AT ANNEXING THE CITY OF JERUSALEM AND CHANGING ITS STATUS.

ONE OF THE MAJOR TALKING POINTS AT THE CONFERENCE WAS THE PROPOSAL TO SET UP A PERMANENT SECRETARIAT IN THE HOLY CITY OF MECCA. AFTER LONG CLOSED-DOOR DISCUSSIONS THE MOTION WAS PASSED 18 VOTES TO THREE. THE VOTE REFLECTED THE DEEP SPLIT IN THE ARAB WORLD BETWEEN THE LEFT WING AND THE REST. EGYPT, SUDAN AND LIBYA VOTED AGAINST THE PROPOSAL AND THREE OTHER STATES, IRAQ, SYRIA AND SOUTH YEMEN ABSTAINED. ALGERIA RECORDED HER RESERVATION BUT VOTED FOR THE PROPOSAL.

IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE MAIN OPPOSITION TO THE MOVE STEMMED FROM FEARS THAT THE SECRETARIAT WOULD BE DOMINATED BY ARAB CONSERVATIVES AND MOSLEM ORTHODOXY.

THE CONFERENCE BEGAN ON MONDAY (MARCH 23). IT WAS ATTENDED BY FOREIGN MINISTERS FROM 24 NATIONS.

THE TALKS WERE OPENED BY KING FAISAL OF SAUDI ARABIA. HE URGED THE DELEGATES TO WORK TOWARDS ESTABLISHING LASTING CO-OPERATION BETWEEN MOSLEM PEOPLE.
