  • Description

Foreign Ministers and delegates from all the ten Arab League countries, met at Baghdad's Palace of Flowers Jan 30 for the opening session of a conference on "common affairs and international events and their complications". Tunisia is attending the conference for the first time since 1958, when President Bourguiba quarrelled with U.A.R. President Nasser.

Reminding his audience that this was the second meeting within a few months, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hochim Jawad, in his opening speech, spoke of the "genuine feeling and profound desire for re-uniting the Arab countries." He added: "Our battle with criminal Israel, after it has proceeded on the road to nuclear war, has become a battle for existence.

Other big issues in Arab eyes mentioned at the brief opening session, were Zionism, imperialism, Algeria, Palestine, and Oman.
