  • Description

FOUR-HUNDRED AND 71 BOYS TOOK PART IN A 41-MILE MARATHON WALK FROM MACHAKOS TO NAIROBI IN KENYA (MAY 4) TO RAISE MONEY FOR A SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL FUND. AT THE END OF THE MARATHON, THERE WERE 367 FINISHERS.

FRANCIS GITHENGI AND SAM MUIDI WERE THE FIRST WALKERS HOME AND THEY DEAD-HEATED AFTER SIX HOURS AND 48 MINUTES ON THE ROAD. THE MARATHON WAS EXPECTED TO TAKE A LITTLE LESS THAN 12 HOURS.

WHEN THE MARATHON GOT UNDERWAY AT FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING, ONE OF THE STARTERS WAS THE 45-YEAR-OLD MINISTER OF HOUSING, PAUL NGEI. MR. NGEI COMPLETED 18 MILES OF THE COURSE BUT HE WAS ON HAND AT THE FINISH LINE TO GREET THE WINNERS.

THE NEW SWIMMING POOL IS PLANNED FOR THE MACHAKOS SCHOOL, WHICH IS ONE OF THE LARGEST SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KENYA. THE MARATHON WAS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF FUND-RAISING EFFORTS THE SCHOOL HAS PLANNED. EACH OF THE BOYS ENTERED IN THE MARATHON WAS SPONSORED AT 50 CENTS A HEAD.

A LEADING EAST AFRICAN CEMENT COMPANY HAS OFFERED TO SUPPLY SOME OF THE MATERIALS NEEDED TO BUILD THE POOL, AND A SHOE MANUFACTURER, WHO SPONSORED 100 BOYS IN THE MARATHON, OFFERED A PAIR OF SHOES TO EVERYONE OF ITS ENTRANTS WHO FINISHED.
