INTRODUCTION: The Albanian people went to the polls this week (3 April) to cast their votes for the people's councils and courts.

SYNOPSIS: The Albanian News Agency reported that the elections turned into a festive occasion with folk dances and songs dedicated to socialist construction. Communist Party leader, 67-year-old Enver Hoxha, who has ruled the 2.4 million Albanians with an iron hand for more than three decades, was one of the first to vote. The news agency reported that the entire Albanian electorate voted in the elections. It said that more then 99.99 per cent backed candidates of the Democratic Front, a workers' organisation.

According to Albanian Television the people regard the votes cast for the candidates of the Democratic Front as votes for the Marxist-Leninist general line of the Party of Labour and for the defence of the country. Albania, on the border of Yugoslavia and Greece, exists in a self-imposed isolation. Mr Hoxha turned his back on the Soviet Kremlin some 15 years ago and since then the country has been more closely aligned to China than any other power. However, even relations with China have cooled over the last year. But at least on this day, no-one appeared to be unduly worried.
