  • Description

Two Mississippi stern-wheel driven river boats, the Delta Queen and the Belle of Louisville, both well known to river boat historians throughout the United States, churned the waters of the Ohio River on Wednesday (2 May) as they raced each other in an annual series of speed tests.

The Delta Queen, with new boilers and a stronger paddle wheel at its rear, was favourite to win the event. The Belle of Louisville started our in fine style, keeping well to the Indiana side of the Ohio River and also tried a few crafty navigational tricks.

But the Delta Queen, with 368 passengers aboard, pulled steadily ahead. The craft are the last two remaining steam-powered stern-wheelers in the United States.

The Delta Queen's re-fit paid off. The vessel stormed away from the Belle of Louisville and was an easy winner. The winning Captain proudly received the traditional trophy -- a pair of antlers.

The series now stands at five victories each.
