  • Description

Egypt has pledged it will not attack in a new Middle East war if it is started by other Arab nations, Israeli and US officials said on Sunday (24 August).

United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger also told Israeli leaders on his return from Egypt and Syria that Egypt had agreed to Israel manning the important Umm Hasheibeh early warning post in Sinai. This had been one of the obstacles to a new peace settlement according to authoritative sources.

Dr. Kissinger visited Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad to allay Syrian suspicions that could jeopardise a Middle East peace agreement. Syrian officials said Mr. Assad pressed for a firm US commitment that talks will begin soon for the recovery of the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967.

On his return to Israel Dr. Kissinger was again met by right-wing Israeli demonstrators hostile to any agreement which involves Israeli withdrawals in Sinai.
