    CANADA WILL MEET THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE COST OF ENGINEERING SURVEYS AND DRILLING EQUIPMENT WORTH $2.7 MILLION MALAYSIAN (900 THOUSAND U.S.) FOR THE PROPOSED HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME IN CENTRAL MALAYA - MALAYSIA'S BIGGEST.THE AID IS UNDER THE COLOMBO PLAN.

    THE TERMS ARE SET OUT IN A "MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING" SIGNED IN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), BY THE CANADIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER, MR.C.E.McGAUGHEY, AND DATO JAMIL BIN ABDUL RAIS, THE PERMANENT SECRETARY TO THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER'S DEPARTMENT.

    UNDER THE MEMORANDUM, THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT WILL MEET ALL LOCAL COSTS AND SUBSISTENCE ALLOWANCES OF CANADIAN EXPERTS.THE EXPERTS HAVE ALREADY CARRIED OUT HYDROLOGICAL TESTS, EXPLORATORY DRILLING AND SURFACE MAPPING -- ESTIMATED AT $1.1 MILLION MALAYSIAN (ABOUT 380,000 U.S.DOLLARS).

    THE SCHEME, WHICH WILL EXTEND FROM PERLIS, IN NORTH-WEST MALAYA TO JONORE IN THE SOUTH, IS ESTIMATED TO COST $135 MILLION MALAYSIAN ($45 MILLION U.S.).FUNDS ARE EXPECTED TO COME FROM THE WORLD BANK.
