Background: In Dar Es Salaam on Sunday (25 April), a large sports meeting was one of several functions marking the seventh anniversary of the formation of Tanzania from the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The meeting was attended by the Minister of State, Mr. Aboud Jumbe.
SYNOPSIS: A large crowd in Dar Es Salaam's National Stadium, on Sunday, watched musicians greet Minister of State Aboud Jumbe, who had arrived to watch a special sports meeting. The meeting was one of several functions commemorating the seventh anniversary of the formation of Tanzania from the territories of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
One of the highlights of the sporting programme was a keenly contested steeplechase event which included several waterjumps. Not all competitors completed the course without incident.
The field included some experienced hurdlers, and some whose luck seemed to have deserted them on the day. However the steeplechase event was eventually won by the strong-running Fulbert Piyo, representing Tanzania's Peoples' Defence Force.
Competition was also keen in the hammer-throwing section, while flag-bearing teams gave a crowd-pleasing display.
The sports programme included a display by gymnasts. Many younger spectators were fascinated by juggling feats.
A human pyramid of gymnasts climaxed the meeting.
