    THE FIFTH AFRICAN-FRANCOPHONE MEDICAL CONGRESS OPENED IN ABIDJAN NO FRIDAY, 20 JANUARY 1967.

    AS THE CONFERENCE WENT ON A MASSIVE DRIVE WAS BEING MADE TO VACCINATE CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF SIX MONTHS AND TWO YEARS AGAINST GERMAN MEASLES. U.S. AID HAD GIVEN 300,000 DOSES AND MOTHERS BROUGHT THEIR CHILDREN FOR VACCINATION IN THE STREETS.

    THE CONFERENCE WAS LARGELY CONCERNED WITH PROBLEMS OF INFANT MORTALITY. ONE IN TEN IVORY COAST CHILDREN DIE IN INFANCY. MORE THAN 400 LEADING MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PERSONALITIES ATTENDED. THIS WAS THE SECOND SITTING OF THE CONFERENCE.

    THE FIRST WAS HELD IN DAKAR RECENTLY.
