    Cracow, the third largest city in Poland is known primarily for its grand historical style and cultural leadership. A city of artistic riches its market place (Rynek Glowny) or Main Square has existed since the 13th century. Throughout the 14th century and the Middle Ages Cracow served as Poland's major economic and political centre. It was also one of Europe's foremost cultural centres. The city's architectural development was overwhelming and a vast number of historic buildings remain -- including some 60 old churches. But modern Cracow is situated in the heart of an industrial region -- air pollution and industry have wrecked a heavy price on the city's architectural treasures. The authorities have launched major anti-pollution drive costing millions of dollars. they have also restored the ancient and bustling city centre, the famous medieval market and some of the most beautiful churches and statues, including the Church of the Virgin Mary (Mariaki Church) whose main section dates from section dates from 1497.
