Background: The President of the Republic of Niger called on President Pompidou at the Elysee Palace today (Tuesday). President Hamani Diori is on a brief private visit to France for health reasons.
He had already called on the Prime Minister M. Jacques Chabam-Delmas and was extremely cautious in his comments to newsmen after talking with President Pompidou.
In answer to questions he said that he expected traditional French-African policies of co-operation would continue as they had in the past. On the subject of the civil war raging in neighbouring Nigeria, the President of Niger said that President Pompidou had not been in the Elysee long enough to have formulated a policy on the war. He said that he hoped the war, "which had gone on too long" would be ended with "full respect for sovereignty and the rights of individuals."
