Background: THE ANCIENT CRAFT OF DOOR-CARVING IS ONE THAT IS FAST DYING OUT IN THE EAST AFRICAN SULTANATE OF ZANZIBAR. BUT, EACH YEAR, THE REMAINING EXPONENTS OF THE TECHNIQUE - THAT HAS BEEN PASSED FROM FATHER TO SON OVER THE GENERATIONS - COMPETE TO FIND WHO CAN PRODUCE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DOOR.

A LEADING ARTIST IN THE PRODUCTION OF THESE FAMOUS DOORS WAS ABDULLAH ALI. HE STARTED ON ONE OF THEM IN 1951. AFTER HIS RECENT DEATH, TWO INDIANS, TO WHOM HE TAUGHT THE RUDIMENTS OF THE CRAFT, HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO COMPLETE THE DOOR BY THE END OF 1961 - AND SO ENTER IT FOR THE NATIONAL COMPETITION.

EXQUISITELY CARVED DOORS FROM ZANZIBAR DID A THRIVING TRADE IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS, PARTICULARLY IN AMERICA, BEFORE THE LAST WORLD WAR. NOW, THE SULTAN, SEVVID SIR ABDULLA BIN KHALIFA, HAS FORBIDDEN ANY FURTHER EXPORT OF THE DOORS.
