  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of the United Arab Republic was given an enthusiastic reception when he visited Assiut in Upper Egypt on Monday (JANUARY 11). He told a mass rally that Egypt was ready to fight for its territory occupied by Israelis.

President Sadat described United States' suggestions that his country should make concessions to achieve peace in the Middle East as "blackmail and cheap logic" which Egypt rejected. Egypt was keen to have a peaceful solution but would not submit, surrender or bargain away any of its rights.

"We can tell our enemies and friends alike that we are the masters of our destiny......nobody decides our destiny except us," he said.

The President reiterated that the country must be ready by February the fifth -- when the present cease-fire agreement with Israel expires -- for an all-out battle. It would not be confined to a battle-front in the Suez Canal area alone, he said, but to every home, factory and village.
