    THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU) COMMITTEE MET IN NIGERIA ON THURSDAY TO DISCUSS THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR WITH THE NIGERIAN MILITARY HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL YAKUBO GOWON. THE FOUR MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE WHO MET GENERAL GOWON WERE EMPEROR HAILE SELAISSIE OF ETHIOPIA (CHAIRMAN), GENERAL ANKRAH, LEADER OF THE GHANAIAN NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO OF CAMEROUN, AND PRESIDENT HAMANI DIORI OF NIGER. TWO OTHER MEMBERS -- LIBERIAN PRESIDENT WILLIAM TUBMAN AND CONGOLESE PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU -- WERE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE FIRST SESSION WHICH WAS HELD IN THE "NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS."
    AFTER THE MEETING IT WAS ANNOUNCE THAT GHANA'S HEAD OF STATE, LIEUTENANT GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, WOULD CONTACT BIAFRAN LEADERS IN A PEACE ATTEMPT. THE COMMITTEE ALSO CALLED ON BIAFRA TO RENOUNCE ITS SECESSION.

    THE COMMITTEE -- WHICH AIMS AT BRINGING PEACE TO NIGERIA -- APPOINTED BY THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU) AFTER THE SECESSION OF EASTERN NIGERIA ON MAY 30TH, AS THE INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA, LED TO CIVIL WAR.
