    TYPHOON FAYE, WITH WINDS UP TO 100 MILES PER HOUR, SWEPT THROUGH SOUTH OF HONGKONG AND WHIPPED UP A DUST STORM. AND INSTEAD OF THE USUAL DRENCHING RAIN, SHOWERS TOTALLYING LESS THAN ONE-THIRD OF AN INCH FELL DURING THE DAY, AND EVAPORATED ALMOST AS SOON AS THEY HIT THE PARCHED GROUND.

    ACCORDING TO THE POLICE, THREE PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 53 INJURED, MOST OF THE INJURED SUFFERED IN THE HOUSE COLLAPSE AND SOME BY FLYING BROKEN GLASSES.

    THOUGH NO DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO SHIPPING IN THE HARBOUR, IT DID, HOWEVER, CAUSE THE DIVERSION OF THREE INCOMING AIRLINE FLIGHTS FROM BANGKOK, CAMBODIA AND SAIGON.

    THE SQUATTERS AT SHANTIN, WHERE JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, TYPHOON WANDA DROWNED 70 PEOPLE AND DID MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE, WERE EVACUATED TO SAFETY BEFORE HIGH TIDE.

    A NUMBER OF FERRY RUNS TO OUTLYING ISLANDS WERE CANCELLED IN MID-AFTERNOON. THE MAIN-CROSS HARBOUR FERRY SERVICES RAN THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

    HIGH WINDS ALSO WHIPPED UP HUGE WAVES ON THE EASTERN COAST OF THE COLONY, WHICH COUPLED WITH AN UNUSUALLY HIGH TIDE. LED TO THE EVACUATION OF ABOUT 2,000 PEOPLE IN THE NEW TERRITORIES WHEN IT THREATENED TO FLOOD THEIR HOMES. AT LEAST TEN SQUATTER HUTS WERE DESTROYED AND OVER ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE MADE HOMELESS.
