    THIS WEEK SAW THE OPENING OF SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST INLAND AUTOMOBILE FACTORY. THE PLANT IS AT ROSSLYN, NORTH-EAST OF PRETORIA, AND IS OPERATED BY THE JAPANESE CAR MANUFACTURING FIRM, DATSUN-NISSAN.

    THE FACTORY WILL INTRODUCE A LOCAL VERSION OF THE DATSUN-NISSAN 1.3-LITRE BLUEBIRD. LATER IN THE YEAR A 2-LITRE CAR WILL BE PRODUCED. PREVIOUSLY SOUTH AFRICA'S MOTOR INDUSTRY HAD BEEN LOCATED AT PORT ELIZABETH, AT THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE COUNTRY. DATSUN, HOWEVER, SAID THE MARKET FOR THEIR PRODUCTS IS MORE INLAND. DR. DIEDERICHS DELIVERED THE INAUGURAL SPEECH AT THE PLANT.
