  • Description

Rolls-Royce RB211 engines have been chosen by Qantas, Australia's international airline, to power its new long-range Boeing 747 airliners, the airline announced today. Since the present Qantas fleet of 17 Boeing 747s is powered by American engines, the order is a significant breakthrough for Rolls-Royce.

This new order follows an announcement for Rolls-Royce earlier this week that 1978 has been a record year for the company. It has signed deals which could be worth more than GBP 2000 millions. Exports for the year are expected to top 50% of sales.

The engine selected for the Qantas aircraft is the RB211-524B rated at 50,000 lb take-off thrust. The Boeing 747s with these engines will initially be operated at 820,000 lb all-up-weight. The number of orders and options for RB211-powered aircraft now totals more than 340 for 15 of the world's leading airlines.
