    HE WAS WELCOMED AT THE AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT DE VALERA AND EIRE PRIME MINISTER SEAN LEMASS BEFORE DRIVING TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY.TENS OF THOUSANDS LINING THE ROUTE CHEERED THE PRESIDENT WILDLY AND POLICE HAD A BATTLE ON THEIR HANDS TO KEEP THE THRONGING CROWDS BACK FROM THE OPEN CAR.

    IN HIS OPENING WORDS OF WELCOME THE IRISH PRESIDENT SPOKE IN GAELIC - BUT THEN QUICKLY BROKE INTO ENGLISH TO ASSURE MR.KENNEDY OF A WARM WELCOME.

    PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S TRIP HAS LITTLE OR NO POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND IS PRIMARILY A SENTIMENTAL VISIT TO THE LAND HIS GREAT GRANDFATHER LEFT IN THE 1840's TO SETTLE TO AMERICA.
