  • Description

More than fifty thousand demonstrators marched through the streets of Lisbon on Thursday night (23 October) demanding a more left wing government.
The demonstration was seen as a threat to the month old government led by Admiral Azevedo de Pinheiro. It coincided with an announcement by Portugal's armed extreme left wing militia that it was going underground to avoid an anticipated crackdown by the new government on the illegal possession of arms.
The leader of the Proletarian Revolutionary Party-Revolutionary Brigades (PRP-BR), Senora Isabel do Carmo said the left wing forces were ready "to meet the reactionary violence which the bourgeoisie of Portugal are preparing to unleash on the country's working class".
The leader of Portugal's Internal Security Forces, Copcon said the decision by the left wing organisations to go underground could lead to a left wing coup.
Many of the fifty thousand demonstrators were members of Portugal's armed forces. They participated in the demonstration dressed in uniform and carrying large photographs of the former pro-communist Prime Minister, General Vasco Goncalves.
