  • Description

In the Spanish capital, Madrid, the 62-year-old Spanish Communist leader Santiago Carrillo has been released from jail following major demonstrations against his imprisonment. Senor Carrillo, Secretary-General of the Spanish Communist Party, had been held for a week amid international protests. He was released on bail. Six other party officials and his personal secretary, also charged with illegal association, were released on bail earlier.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of demonstrators gathered for one protest in Madrid's main street, the Gran Via. Chanting "Free Carrillo" and "Total Amnesty" they showered leaflets near waiting riot police.

Earlier a group of opposition politicians had tried to deliver a letter to the Justice Minister protesting at the arrest of the communist leader. But police refused to allow the letter to be handed over. A news conference by a delegation of Italian parliamentary deputies was also halted earlier by police - the deputies were in Madrid to support the campaign to free Carrillo.

The demonstration erupted into running battles when the riot squad moved in to break up the crowd with tear gas, smoke bombs and rubber bullets.

Shoppers field for cover as the tear gas spread and police hit out at young demonstrators.

Several arrests were made. Among them was a former priest, Francisco Garcia Salve, now a leader of the communist-dominated Workers Commissions Trade Union.
