Mr. Liu Pu, from the People's Republic of China, became the new Chinese ambassador to Malta on Monday (19 June). He presented his credentials to the Governor-General, Sir Anthony Mame, in Valletta.
Diplomatic relations were established between China and Malta in February and in May the Maltese Prime Minister, Dom Mintoff, announced that a Chinese embassy would be established on the island. The embassy of Taiwan was subsequently closed and the staff returned to Taipei.
Over the past year, several nations have officially recognised the government of Peking, with the result that the embassies of Taiwan have been replaced by these of China. The Mediterranean has been no exception. A Chinese government mission arrived in Nicosia on Monday from Peking to establish an embassy in Cyprus. The Taiwan government maintained an embassy in Nicosia until the Cyprus government recognised Peking last year.
