Background: Near Bratislava in Southern Czechoslovakia this week, Warsaw Pact Forces have been engaged in what Czechoslovak Television (who supplied this coverage) described as the biggest-ever manoeuvres. Radio Budapest has said the exercises, code-named "Shield 72", were the answer to "provocative" manoeuvres by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Units of the soviet armada, East German, Hungarian, Polish, and Czechoslovak armies are taking part. The manoeuvres on Wednesday (13 Sept)... the second day of "Shield 72"...included river-crossings by heavy tanks under the cover of air end artillery support. The Defence Ministers of all participating countries are attending, and Bulgaria and Rumania...whose troops are not represented...have sent observers.
