  • Description

The Arab League is meeting in Amman, Jordan to work out the details of moving its headquarters from Cairo to Tunis. The move is necessary because of Egypt's suspension from the League. A six member committee began meeting on Saturday (2 June) to discuss Arab sanctions against Egypt.

SYNOPSIS: Since the suspension Egypt has refused to hand over documents belonging to the Arab League or to settle its debts, which according to the Secretary-General of the Council for Arab Economic Unity, Fakhri Qaddouri, Total around 1.25 million dollars (U.S.).

Observers say it's political isolation which is likely to cause Egypt more hurt than economic sanctions. Egypt's trade with Arab world accounts for only about six percent of its trade, and it is nearly totally self-sufficient in oil.

It was the transfer of Arab League headquarters to which the special committee paid most attention. The League faces the difficult task of re-organising itself... despite the readiness of other members to provide it with copies of the missing files.
