    Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to accelerate cooperation in food and enjoy production to achieve self sufficiently for its increasing population.

    Opening a two-day ASEAN Economic Ministers Conference in Manila on Friday (7 Sep), President Marcos also stressed the need for continuing economic cooperation in light of the rising spectre of protectionism on the part of developed nations.

    "If protectionism in its present forms and intensity will continue to plague world trade, our exports will experience more severe difficulties in the years ahead, Marcos said.

    "Happily, he in ASEAN have laid strong foundations for meeting these challenges. "he told the economic ministers of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

    During the meeting, Australia's cheap air fare scheme is expected to come under future close scrutiny and debate, the policy aims to revise fares and flights between Australia and Europe as well as between Australia and Asia.

    M. Marcos said the ASEAN region had about 250 million people and the number was increasing each day, and one of the most important responsibilities of the ASEAN governments was the assurance of enough food.
