  • Description

A series of games of chess was recently fought out between a team in Melbourne and their opponents hundreds of miles off in Sydney.

No mirrors to signal the moves over the miles were involved - and no telepathy. It was all done by morse signals. This way the players made 200 moves an hour.

Each player contests an individual game with his opponent in the other city. Australian co-champion Karl Ozols is one of the Melbourne team. Scorers note each move, send them to a clearing centre. Signallers tap out the moves to Sydney.

Other chess stars are John Hanks in Melbourne, and in Sydney John Purdy, 19 year old youngest Australian champion, Gregory Koshnitsky and Cecil Purdy.
