    DELEGATES FROM TEN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING A FOUR-DAY SEMINAR ON DEAFNESS IN KENYA. THE SEMINAR WAS OPENED IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BY THE KENYAN EDUCATION MINISTER, DR. JULIUS GIKONYO KIANO.

    THE SEMINAR HAS BEEN ORGANISED BY THE COMMONWEALTH SOCIETY FOR THE DEAF, IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE KENYA SOCIETY OF DEAF CHILDREN. DELEGATES ARE FROM BRITAIN, CANADA, NIGERIA, GHANA, SIERRA LEONE, ZAMBIA, UGANDA, TANZANIA, MAURITIUS AND MALAWI, AS WELL AS THE HOST COUNTRY.

    THE SEMINAR IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND TO BE HELD IN AFRICA. IN HIS OPENING ADDRESS, DR. KIANO TOLD DELEGATES THAT THERE WERE AN ESTIMATED 7000 DEAF PEOPLE IN KENYA AND ONLY ABOUT 500 OF THESE ARE RECEIVING TREATMENT.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMONWEALTH SOCIETY, LADY TEMPLAR, AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE KENYA BRANCH, MRS. J.J. HUGHES, ALSO ADDRESSES THE DELEGATES.
