ECEVIT: "In spite of his great difficulties, Mr. Denktash is in a very constructive position. But I am afraid I cannot say the same thing for the recent attitude, or the continuing attitude of the Greek community in Cyprus because - some recent statement, official statements, are rather discouraging. I hope that this atmosphere does not continue during the inter-communal talks, and I hope that the constructive attitude of Mr. Denktash will be reciprocated."

DENKTASH: "We need peace in Cyprus because since 1955 we have suffered. We have had no security. We have had no peace. And it is only since 1974 that we have found security and peace in our area. We want cooperation and coordination with the Greek side, and we hope that our proposals will pave the way for a final solution soon."

Mr. Ecevit will be meeting his Greek counterpart, Mr. Constantine Karamanlis, in the Swiss town of Montreaux this weekend (10 and 11 March). An official announcement in Athens, the Greek capital, said the two Premiers will have an exchange of views without any rigid agenda. But the Cyprus question is expected to figure prominently during their discussions.
