  • Description

Angolan President Agostinho Neto has spoken in Luanda of a possible co-operation agreement with Belgium which would be the first between Angola and a Western Capitalist nation according to the Angolan News Agency ANGOP. Dr. Neto was speaking to Belgian reporters who had accompanied the Belgian Foreign Minister Henri Simonet on a four-day visit to Angola which ended on Sunday 10th September.

SYNOPSIS: Western Europe should have more dialogue with left-wing African regimes. His visit came just weeks after a trip to neighbouring Zaire, which was formerly Belgian territory.

Angola, a former Portuguese colony, is of economic importance to Belgium because the Benguela railway, which M. Simonet visited, from Zaire's copper mines to the sea crosses Angolan territory. Angola and Zaire have recently publicly made up their differences.

Most of Mr. Simonet's talks were with Angola's Minister of Foreign Relations, Paulo Texeira Jorge. He also travelled round the country to see diamond mines and oilfields in which Belgian firms have an interest.

After M. Simonet and President agostinho Neto met each gave a press conference. M Simonet said he was very impressed by Angola's views in the prospects of future co-operation with Western countries. President Neto told Belgian journalists that any co-operation agreement with Belgium would not affect Angola's agreements with other friendly countries. he said aid Angola was receiving from the Soviet Union. Cuba and other Socialist countries, had no political or ideological strings attached. The Belgian news agency quoted President Neto as saying he hoped Belgium would help improve Angola's agriculture, consumer goods and processing industries.
