  • Description

In the north Spanish town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Easter religious rituals keep alive a flagellation ceremony which dates back over 800 years. A procession, carrying figures of the Virgin Mary and of Christ being scourged, is followed by hooded penitents or "Oecaos". During the hundred yards that they walk in procession, the penitents give themselves 100 lashes with "latigos" -- heavy knotted scourges.
